HI THERE, NEIGHBOR!
Join me in my campaign to represent SD 60 in the MN State Senate.
A resident of NE Minneapolis for 8 years, I know our community has long served as a landing spot for families looking to build their lives and homes - just like mine. Let’s keep making that true for future generations.
Why me?
Approachable & Accessible
Your Senator represents you! Meet me at any of SD 60’s abundant breweries or coffee shops for a chat. I’m an open book and love getting to know my community. See you at the next fish fry or open studio night!
Inclusive Growth
My vision for our district is one where all individuals, families, and businesses can thrive. With all the resources of the district (our amazing universities, businesses, nonprofits and neighborhoods) everyone who chooses to make SD 60 home should have affordable housing, family-sustaining job opportunities, healthy and safe communities, and access to green spaces.
Community-Engaged
I don’t just volunteer - I have dedicated my personal and professional life to public service. From teaching middle school students on the Pine Ridge Reservation to serving on the Hennepin County Library Board, public institutions are my jam. I am a former board member of East Side Neighborhood Services and the City of Minneapolis Public Health Advisory Committee.
Evidence-Driven
With a degree in public policy and over 13 years’ experience in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, I know the issues we face are complicated - but solvable. I’ll bring my policy chops and quantitative know-how to the Senate as well as a commitment to follow the evidence, ask the right questions, and be a strong steward of community resources.
MY STORY
I didn’t grow up in Minneapolis - or even Minnesota. As a child, I lived in 5 different countries (if you’re curious: Bangladesh, the U.S., Switzerland, South Korea, and China!) and 4 different states as an adult. I’ve never lived anywhere longer than 4 years at a time - until NE Minneapolis.
Like many transplants, I moved to Minnesota for a romantic partner. My now-husband and I have called NE Minneapolis home since 2016. As a Bangladeshi-American Muslim woman, I have had the good fortune of being welcomed in this neighborhood and making our home in Logan Park with our Labrador mix and 1-year old baby. Ayla, our daughter, recently took her first steps at Bottineau Library. My husband Bryan is from southern Minnesota and leads an organization serving adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities through creative writing. He also serves as the president of the council at NE’s Grace Lutheran Church. We love our neighborhood’s small businesses, parks, and vibrant community spaces.
I have a bachelors degree from Pomona College and masters degree in public affairs from Princeton University. I’ve taught in under resourced schools, conducted research on education internationally, fought for equity in education nationally, and helped to build a data-driven grantmaking program at the Constellation Fund to fight poverty in the Twin Cities. Right now, I work at the ECMC Foundation - a national foundation working to close equity gaps in postsecondary completion around the country. I’m excited to bring my experience and perspectives to the role of State Senator! And yes, I was once a contestant on Jeopardy!
